The Nine O’clock Gun is a 12-pound, naval cannon that is fired at 9:00pm every evening in Stanley Park as a time signal to the general population. Originally, the cannon was cast in England in 1816 but was later brought to Stanley Park by the Department of Marine and Fisheries in 1894 to warn fisherman of the close of fishing. Today, the cannon is still loaded daily with a black powder charge but is activated with an electronic trigger.  Exactly 10 seconds before it fires, the fluorescent lights illuminating the gun go out and turn back on a few seconds after.
