SIWASH ROCK

Situated between Third Beach and Lions Gate Bridge is one of the most iconic figures in Stanley Park. Siwash Rock is an incredible 32 million-year-old rock standing 18m high. There is a handful of Douglas Firs perched a top of the rock adding to the unique look. There are two explanations as to the origins of Siwash Rock. The first explanation for the rock is from a volcanic dike forming in the sand and mudstone. The more interesting explanation comes from the Squamish Nations in a historical story about a young chief named Skalsh. To commemorate his bravery and commitment to family, the gods transformed him into stone when he swam back to shore, towards his wife and child at dawn. Today, the rock is a symbol of ‘clean fatherhood’.
